The Southern California Library aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for all people and groups whose work aligns with the spirit of our mission. The Library offers space for use at a subsidized rate. The Library provides this space to a diverse range of individuals and groups for a variety of purposes including: organizing, activism, learning and reflection, healing, and art.
We are committed to practices that aid the Library in becoming a place where folks feel welcome and comfortable. Therefore, groups using the Library's space should similarly engage in practices of expression and relations that serve to reduce and prevent harm in all its forms.
The Library reserves the right to intervene with any group whose presence at or use of the Library negatively impacts other groups and/or individuals.
The Library is a place of community activity located in close proximity to mostly residential streets. It is important that we maintain a positive relationship with our neighbors while continuing to provide a space for people who come to the Library from other areas. Please be mindful and considerate of our neighbors.
Terms and Conditions
Library staff are responsible for safe and efficient operation of the building. We therefore ask that you follow the instructions of Library staff at all times and without exception.
Every renter must appoint a point person to be in charge of an event, designated in the Space Use Agreement. This point person is responsible for communication and coordination with the Library in advance of the event and will be the prime contact with the Library during the event.
When the renter's point person arrives, they must check in with Library staff and continue to be available should issues arise that need to be addressed. The point person can address any questions/concerns that come up during the event with Library staff.
The Library is committed to not relying on police in particular, and criminal justice systems in general, for maintaining safety and addressing harm. We ask that all users of the Library space be proactive in preventing acts of violence and harassment before they occur. We recognize that there is not one "right" way to deal with these threats, and only ask that renters act as creatively and collectively as possible to ensure the well-being of the space and those who enter it.
Toward this end:
- Renters are responsible for maintaining a safe space, and for the actions of their members and guests before, during and after their events.
- Renters agree that no portion of the sidewalks, entries, doorways, or ways of access to restrooms and other utilities shall be obstructed by the renters, their guests or used for any purpose other than for entering and exiting a room or the building.
- Children must be under adult supervision at all times.
- Renters agree, whenever possible, to speak to Library staff about possible solutions before calling police, ICE, or other state officials to intervene at the Library, and to immediately notify Library staff in the event that such a call has been made.
We are happy to have you drop off flyers about your event for our community flyer rack. However, we ask that you refrain from posting publicity materials on nearby telephone and light poles and other structures, as this can result in city issued fines. Please be advised that we are not responsible for any charges incurred due to such activity.
It is the renter's responsibility to make sure their event concludes and the space is restored to its pre-event condition by the end of the reserved time. It is important to allocate time in the event agenda for break down/clean up.
Library staff will provide you with a cleaning checklist when you arrive for use during and after the event.
We require that renters not conduct any activity that will injure or deface the Library in any manner. This includes but is not limited to putting up nails, tacks, or screws without receiving permission from Library staff. Placement of all decorations and signage shall be with the approval and supervision of Library staff. Please do not drag tables when setting up, ask staff if you need help picking them up and moving to another spot. Please ensure that all trash created from your function has been placed in bags at the top of the kitchen ramp.
Guided tours of the Library and its collections during an event are available by request. Request for a tour or other display of Library collections needs to be made at least one week prior to the event.
Fees for Use of Space and Equipment
The Library charges fees for use of space and equipment on a sliding scale depending on day of week, time and organizational budget. Fees for space include time for prep and clean up. Upon receipt of the Rental Request Form, Library staff will review and return with a quote for fees.
The Library may require deposits as it deems necessary, including but not limited to non-refundable deposits on space fees.
Full payment is due on or before the day of meetings and events, or as determined within the Space Use Agreement.
Payments can be made in cash, credit card, or check payable to the "Southern California Library.” You can make payments in person, by mail, or by phone.
To assure that payments are credited properly, a copy of a Space Use Agreement or a note detailing the name and date of the event for which payment is being made must accompany them.
To pay by mail or in person, send or come to this address: 6120 S. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90044
For events cancelled by the renter, the full deposit will be refunded if the cancellation is made more than 3 days before the event. If cancellation is made in fewer than 3 days before the event, half of the deposit will be returned.
Renters entering into Space Use Agreements with the Library will hold harmless the Library and staff from any and all claims for damages or injuries to persons or property arising during the period covered in the Library’s Space Use Agreement.
The Library retains the right to terminate any Space Use Agreement without prior notice if the Library determines that the renter in any way failed to adhere to the rules outlined in this document or any of its attachments. Furthermore, the Library reserves the right to cancel any future meetings or events already booked by or later requested by the same renter.
Use of the Library’s name and/or address as a meeting site in publicity materials does not constitute an endorsement by the Library or renter or the event.
The Library will be held harmless for any and all damages and penalties from the improper use of copyrighted materials by any renter using space at the Library.
Meeting rooms and restrooms are wheelchair accessible.
Guide dogs and assistance animals for people with disabilities are permitted in the Library but must be on a leash at all times and muzzled, if necessary. No other animals are permitted.
Any media presence at the Library requires approval of Library staff. Users must notify staff if they are inviting or expect news media.
Street parking is available in front of the Library and on side streets.
There are two main spaces: The Main Lounge and Reading Room. Library staff will assist you in identifying the best room for your event.
