The Fall 2008 issue of the Library's member newsletter Heritage is now available. The newsletter includes the stories of three former Library interns, information about the Library's new graphic novel on South L.A. history, and much more. Forum and Panel Discussion: L.A. Teachers Refuse an Education in Fear
Former Library Board member Muriel Goldsmith lost her job as a substitute teacher when she refused to sign a loyalty oath in 1953. On Thursday, November 20, Muriel will be one of the speakers sharing the memories and lessons of that time at a forum and panel discussion on Blacklisted Teachers in L.A.

Graphic Novel Offers Window to History

The Southern California Library recently published South Central Rhapsody, a new graphic novel by writer Gary Phillips and illustrator Steven Walters. The graphic novel explores the history of plant closures, immigration, police brutality and resistance, offering a window to some of the factors that create the communities young people find today. An accompanying resource guide and website will point readers to related resources and collections at the Library.




Election Film Mini-Series Sparks Conversations
The Southern California Library held an election film mini-series in October featuring Juvies and Chisholm '72. You can check out copies of the films at the Library or see more information about the films

SCL and CAAM Explore the Legacy of the Black Panther Party
The Southern California Library joins with the California African American Museum on a new exhibit, A Moment in Time: Bingham's Black Panthers. In an exploration of the place the Black Panther Party has assumed in our movements and our memories, the Library will take part in several programs related to the exhibit.
