"Coming Out, Coming Home" Performance Art and Reading

Saturday, May 10, 2008
2 p.m.

In partnership with Satrang, a social, cultural, and support organization for Southern California's South Asian lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and questioning (LGBTIQQ) community

In the culminating event of a series of workshops held at the Library, led by theater artist D'Lo ("born gay into a Hindu family and raised by hip hop"), writers will share stories of being both South Asian or South Asian-American and LGBTIQQ.

For each of us, in different ways, claiming our own history and speaking the truth about ALL of who we are remains an act of resistance. An act that is dangerous.

Larry King, an eighth-grade student in Oxnard, was shot to death by a classmate after he started wearing high heels and make-up to school. Victoria Arellano, a 23-year-old transgendered woman, died shackled to her bed in immigration custody in San Pedro. Victoria was detained in a male dormitory and repeatedly denied her AIDS medication. Refusal to acknowledge who we are can cost us our lives.

Attend this event as an act of resistance, solidarity, and love. Share your Saturday with us, tell a friend, as we build community. For more information, call the Library at (323) 759-6063 or call Satrang at 323-632-2213.
