The Library hosted an exploration of South L.A. culture, screening documentary and dramatic films that showed the youth culture of South L.A. from the 1940s to the present. A discussion followed each film, and special guests were in attendance. See the full schedule below.


Saturday, August 14, 11 a.m. at the Library
Our series kicked off with the movie Zoot Suit with Edward James Olmos, and an excerpt from the film Zoot Suit Riots.
Moderator: Ralph Armbruster, Chicano Studies, UC Santa Barbara

Saturday, August 28, 11 a.m. at the Library
Next in our series: Beyond the Screams, a Latino hard core punk documentary, and Graffiti Verite, a documentary that explores the electic world of hip hop and the urban graffiti artist.
Special guests: Martin Sorrendeguy, Screams director, and Bob Bryan Graffiti Verite director.

Saturday, September 11, 11 a.m. at the Library
Colors Straight Up follows a year in the life of black and brown kids who join Colors United, a performing arts group for inner city youth.
Moderator: Gary De La Rosa, City of Los Angeles Human Relations Commission

Saturday, September 25, 11 a.m. at the Library
Pass the Mic is a thought-provoking look into the history of Latinos in hip hop.
Special guests: Gregory Everett, filmmaker, and Raymond Codrington, Natural History Museum.
