A sign in front of a housing tract reading "This tract is exclusive and restricted," ca. Sept. 1950, Los Angeles.

The photograph was published in the California Eagle on Sept. 28, 1950, and contained the following caption: "EXCLUSIVE AND RESTRICTIVE is the invitation to white veterans from builders of the Sunkist Gardens project in Southeast Los Angeles. Negro vets who apply are told the development is for white veterans only. Southeast Negro veterans will enlist the NAACP and American Legion support against the restrictions." The sign illustrates the racism that existed in the Los Angeles housing market, where many properties had restrictive covenants that barred African American and other minorities from buying or renting homes. The Eagle, under the direction of publisher Charlotta Bass, campaigned to end racial discrimination in housing.
