A Look Back at Our 40th
Anniversary Year.
2003 marked the Southern California Library's 40th year of using history to
advance social justice. We began the year with an
anniversary dinner in
April featuring Mike Davis. Then Howard Zinn
spoke for us November 2 for a People's History Night
that was truly memorable. Our 40th
Anniversary Holiday Party and Auction
closed out the year on December 6. Our
2004 annual dinner took place in
March as we headed into our fifth decade.
From
Generation to Generation: Making a Life in South Los Angeles, 1940-2005.
Together with a number of community partners, the Southern California
Library conducted a project that provided South Los Angeles
residents with a chance to tell their own stories about what it is and has
been like to make a life in South L.A. The project kicked off with a film
series in August and featured several community dialogue sessions. More information is available on the
project website (also
en Español).
Call
for People's History. The Southern California Library collects historical material on Los Angeles,
but we also collect current materials-- for one simple reason: If we don't
collect the stories of people's history now, they will not be preserved. You can help us make sure our contemporary
files are comprehensive. If you are involved with a progressive organization
in Los Angeles, feel free to check with us regarding materials that should
be preserved at the Library, including brochures, posters,
correspondence, and other materials. You can call us at (323) 759-6063.
