Book Reading with J. Marx Ayres
Red Diaper Baby on USS Bowfin

Saturday, June 7, 2008
2 p.m.
@ the Southern California Library

Library Emeritus Board Member James Marx Ayres has been a part of the Library's history from its very beginnings. Join us as he tells the story that led to his growing political involvement, working alongside Library Founder Emil Freed.

About the Book

James Marx Ayres has written the first volume of his autobiography, Red Diaper Baby in USS Bowfin. The book draws on his mother's handwritten story of her life, documented with photographs, newspaper clips, and other family history, as well as Marx's research and rich memories.

Copies of the book will be available at the event. All proceeds go to the Library.

Marx will present a slide show based on his new book Red Diaper Baby in USS Bowfin that traces his life from his boyhood in Inglewood California, through the time of the great Economic Depression, to serving in the Navy during World War II.

Marx will share his perspective on L.A. history from the twenties through the forties, including stories of his father--a Presbyterian minister turned communist party organizer--and his mother--a notable sculptor whose artwork can be found in the Library today.
